Cambridge trainer Roger James produced an eye-catching maiden winner at Hawke’s Bay on Thursday when Misty Music overcame a chequered passage to land the Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour in HB 23 July 1650.
Ridden by Masa Tanaka for owner Kevin Hickman, Misty Music was successful at just her second race day outing and the three-year-old daughter of Stravinsky looks to have a future over ground.
“It’s fair to say she would have been unlucky had she not won,” James said. “Masa had to change ground a couple of times on her and she still lacks a bit of ring craft and maturity.”
Misty Music is bred to get over ground, being a daughter of the stakes placed Montjeu mare Mystify, who in turn is a daughter of Gr.1 New Zealand Stakes winner Seamist.
“She’s from that good Inglewood Stud family and they’re better known as four and five-year-olds,” James said.
“She’s close to 17 hands herself and she’ll go in the paddock now and I think we’ve got something to build on.”
