An exhibition gallop between races at Matamata yesterday has Cambridge mares The Tidy Express and Tavy on target for important spring and summer engagements.
On the heavy11 track, the Roger James-trained stablemates worked over 1000 metres in 1:7.95 and completed the final 600 in 40.1. The Tidy Express (Danielle Johnson) led Tavy (Vinnie Colgan) for much of the journey and the pair completed their work together.
“The outing will benefit them both greatly,” said James. “It’s dependant on the weather with both of them, but Tavy may go to Taupo first-up. I’d like to run her in the fillies and mares’ race at Hawera second-up.”
That second-up assignment is the Gr. 3 $50,000 Rich Hill Stud Taranaki Breeders Stakes (1400m) on October 15.
Tavy hasn’t raced since finishing second to stablemate Shees Flawless in the Gr. 3 Inglis Sales Cambridge Breeders Stakes at Te Rapa last April. Earlier in the past season she recorded two wins, including the Listed Trevor Eagle Memorial 3YO, and was third in the Gr. 2 Cambridge Stud Eight Carat Classic at Ellerslie.
The Tidy Express has had slightly longer off the scene, having not raced since finishing unplaced in the Gr. 2 Ezibuy Awapuni Gold Cup last March. She was lightly tried last term, racing just six times for a fresh-up win and two placings, including a fourth in the Gr. 3 Chep Pallecon Counties Cup.
“I’m happy with the way she’s coming up,” said James. “She seems a lot stronger and all going well we’ll have a look at the cups races again.”
As a five-year-old The Tidy Express was runner-up in the Gr. 3 Hawke’s Bay Gold Cup.
