Regally bred four-year-old Future King (Encosta de Lago) may have earned a trip to Australia following his impressive win at Taupo on Monday, at just his second raceday start.
Trainer Roger James is now considering sending the son of Encosta de Lago and dual Group One winner Foxwood (NZ) (Centaine) to Australia with stablemateFull Of Spirit (Flying Spur).
“He can go wherever I decide to take her, whether it be Sydney or Melbourne,” said James. “He won’t be going for anything special, just hoping to win a couple of races over there.”
A successful Australian campaign could see the entire return to New Zealand for the Telegraph Handicap in January.
“I know it’s a lofty height, but I’d like to get him in the Telegraph,” he said. “He would have a better chance of making the field if he could win a couple in Aussie. I believe he’s that good.”
Having finished third at Te Rapa in February at his only other start, jockey Vinnie Colgan believes Future King is on his way up.
“He’s pretty smart,” said Colgan. “I kept him out in the better ground and he did it easily. He got lost a bit the last part on his own and he’ll improve a lot with the run.”
James, who also trained Foxwood, has always held Future King in high regard and he agreed with Colgan’s summation of the performance yesterday. “He blew up after the race and he’s got a bit to learn.”
